Mascara Swatching Series: Benefit They're Real

I received a sample size of this mascara with the Sephora Beauty Insider free birthday gift and have been using it off and on for a couple months.

It has a plastic/non-traditional brush with some extra spikes at the end. I think this shape is what got everyone excited about it originally, but that spiky bit is what bothers me most about this mascara.

The mascara glops into the spikes and I have to gingerly brush it on the tube to remove the excess, all the while hoping I'm not going to fling mascara on to my clothes from a spike getting caught up on the tube. Having excess product at the tip also means that I'm likely to make a mess when using on bottom lashes.

Here's one top set of lashes done vs. my bare lashes to start.

All done, and a fair mess I made! I'm fine with the overall effect of the mascara and will keep using it, but I would not purchase it for the high-end price. I also dislike that I don't feel comfortable in my abilities to use it on my lower lashes without consistently creating clumps or big smudges.

Have you tried Benefit's They're Real? What did you think?

  1. I like the They're Real, but prefer the BADgal Lash way better. It reminds me of Maybelline Full n' Soft which is one of favorite mascaras for my white eyelashes. Have you tried BADgal or Full n' Soft?

    1. I do like Maybelline Full 'N Soft but I think I've only bought it once, the temptation to buy something I've never tried before is too great! Haha. I didn't like Benefit BADGal because the brush was so huge I felt like it was a little tricky to maneuver. Thanks for reminding me though, maybe I'll pick up the Maybelline again soon once I'm done with the current mascara! :)
